a large brick building with a metal roof

Market Place, NW England

Background

Keystone Heritage Consultancy was commissioned by a local authority to deliver an Archaeology Desk-Based Assessment for a large urban redevelopment site.

The Outcome

A clear, planning-ready assessment that identified archaeological potential and constraints, enabling the local authority to confidently progress future redevelopment planning.

The report highlighted that any surviving remains would likely be of local significance, with proportionate mitigation recommended to support future works.

The Challenge

The site had a complex development history, with significant 19th and 20th century activity and previous ground disturbance. There were no confirmed redevelopment proposals at the time, requiring a clear and proportionate assessment to inform future planning decisions.

Our Approach

  • Undertook detailed historic and cartographic research

  • Reviewed archaeological data and consulted the Historic Environment Record

  • Assessed previous development impact and archaeological potential

  • Provided clear, policy-compliant guidance for future planning

  • Recommended appropriate mitigation strategies where needed
